There's actually an extremely good movie on Darwin, with Paul Bettany and the like, that never made it here to the US. I'm thinking of buying it on Amazon.

The Meredith novel sounds kind of interesting - perhaps it can rouse me from my non-Victorian reading pattern. I don't know why, but I've just never shown a real interest in the Victorian Era domestic stuff or stories (with the exception of economic descriptions of the process of industrialization).

Out of curiosity, is Victor Radner's wife blocking any kind of divorce or annulment? Although it was much, much more difficult, usually divorce was possible, even if they made up an excuse for it (like claiming the wife was infertile or the like).

Yes, Victor's wife blocks an annulment. He assumed she would divorce him when he eloped with Nataly, but she doesn't, and- as he sees it- clings stubbornly to life long after the point when she should have died.
