Never ever go near the messes that are
Eragon and
Eldest by Christopher Paolini. They make all of the mistakes above. The telcom, intersting heroines, DLI, and author's darling rants also apply quite nicely to Paolini's books. Don't go near them if you want to retain your sanity.
