The only epic fantasy type books I'm reading and enjoying at the moment are Inda and the The Fox by Sherwood Smith. I think you'd like them, Limyaael - they have an absolutely amazing amount of worldbuilding depth and breadth, complex characters, and there's definitely no Evil Enemies or arbitrary Destiny. - wordweaver on LJ
